To fully understand his reflections you do need to know when they were written, in which context - then they are very poignant and dark, it is definitively not a happy book.
Not all stories have the same impact, the collec Short stories that make you think and are highly critical on society. Not all stories have the same impact, the collection however makes the sum of them stronger since they reinforce the inability to live a full life in a communist society, regardless of the angle chosen.
Beautifully composed snapshot into a country that was at a period in its history where it was taking steps into modernisation, but still constrained under its government. The author is able to paint a vivid image of the strides being taken by the younger generation, whilst the older and rural communities remained rooted to the lives their families had lived for many years.
At times funny, tragic and heart-warming, I would strongly recommend this book to those with an interest in post war Eastern Beautifully composed snapshot into a country that was at a period in its history where it was taking steps into modernisation, but still constrained under its government. At times funny, tragic and heart-warming, I would strongly recommend this book to those with an interest in post war Eastern Europe This book, written while he was banned from covering stories overseas because of the censorhip in Poland at the time.
The stories in this book show a very sweet and sour side of Polish life in the country, at a time when the country was just recovering from the war under the communist regime. Quiet, lyrical, understated, reportages from behind the Iron Curtain in the early s Poland. Timeless situations, timeless characters, the arrival of "modernity" and "progress" in the far out corners of rural Poland which could be rural Romania, or any other corner of Eastern Europe or beyond.
Perfect vignettes filled with sadness, loss, longing, a sense of being misplaced and lost which ironically resonated each morning on the train commute through the English countryside to the "office". Surprisingly the text is not very site specific, he does not necessarily give out common stereotypes of life in Eastern Europe under communist rule.
His focus is rather on human nature and how we act in strange circumstances and deal with the cards handed to us. This collection of essays seemed to focus on fascinating stories about 60s Poland and offered up lyrical and deeply felt moments. Unfortunately, the overall style was very erratic and hard to follow. It might partly be the fault of the translation, but I effectively didn't know where I was in a story a lot of the time. A kind of journalism that has died out.
Steeped in the 'human', without formal constraints, with the full personal involvement of the journalist himself. They listen. The silence is ringing! Please tell me, for a person never knows for sure. I only finished it because I thought maybe one of his stories would talk to me but not really.. A fine collection of essays, some perhaps more art than life, penned by the renowned traveler-report Ryszard Kapuscinski. I love all the other books by Kapuscinski but I just couldn't get into any of these stories.
Only tried the first three so I'll perhaps pick this up another time and try again I love all the other books by Kapuscinski but I just couldn't get into any of these stories.
Only tried the first three so I'll perhaps pick this up another time and try again High surrealism. Beautiful yet sobering snippets of life from Soviet-era Poland. I guess i enjoyed it. I sometimes sensed the meaning that he was striving for. The stories were interesting as a whole. Should re-read sometime. This is not the first book you should read from the author.
It's not his best work BUT if you have already read a bunch of his books like myself this is still worth it. Beautifully poetic throughout. Some really lovely stories and metaphors my favorite stories being A Survivor on a Raft and Us Against the Trees and some stories that were more just reporting about everyday stories with a lovely little flourish.
I learnt a bit more about Polish h Beautifully poetic throughout. I learnt a bit more about Polish history and my ancestry which was good. There were camps, war, executions. That was what we called fascism. Not only Africa is a cursed land. Every land can be like that The world depends on people.
