Where is rydell high school supposed to be

Now, Sandy must devise a way to win back her love, while Danny struggles with his real identity in the face of love. The school is located in an unnamed city in an unnamed state, but the original musical was written with William Howard Taft School in Chicago, Illinois in mind. However, the filming for the movie took place in large part in various locales across the state of California, including three different high schools.

Rydell High School as depicted in the film is actually a composite of three different high schools in real life. The Radnor for Reform group pressured the school with a "Retire the Raider" campaign, even buying and painting political lawn signs with messages like "Not My Mascot" and placing them in the yards of those who agreed with their cause.

Naturally the battle spilled onto social media, bringing with it all of the nuance, empathy and understanding common to Facebook bickering — none. Older alumni and Raider supporters wrote off the students' concerns as the whining of "snowflakes," while anti-Raiders chalked up anyone who wanted to keep even the name as a racist.

Despite the disagreement, the Radnorite's editor-in-chief, Anne Griffin, said that there is limited animosity between the students, as they have to see each other every day and collaborate in class, regardless of where they land on the mascot issue. The town's adults harassing high schoolers ultimately did not work to persuade people to support them; the school board's president ultimately decided the mascot would be changed. The school and community fought a lengthy battle over whether or not to keep "Raider" as the name while removing the offense imagery, but ultimately the name was retired.

The school will now go by a name picked by the students, the Raptors. Join thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their replies.

The first shot of the school captures the anxious excitement of kids on the first day, pouring out of their cars and crossing the lawn. They pass a white plaster statue—the actress Myrna Loy, who, when she modeled for her art teacher in , was year-old Myrna Williams.

Francis taught wood shop and technical theater at the high school at the time of the filming. In fact, he and his students installed the Rydell High School sign that covered up the Venice High School sign above the front doors. It hung in his classroom until he retired in , when he auctioned it off to start a scholarship program.

The lunch bell rings. Doors fly open and chattering students fill the expanse of the front lawn, carrying skateboards, backpacks, band instruments—all with smartphones in their free hands. We get people from all over the world. The whole seating area will soon be a casualty of a modernization project.
