I was just wondering if anyone else from a large urban area is having similar feelings about how small and suburban Raleigh, et al. Not a resident. In fact, just a one time visitor. Try going to University of North Carolina if you haven't yet. Go to their information place by the Moorehead Planetarium. They have a lot of information about, obviously, their campus. But also about Chapel Hill. If you're interested in arts and theater, it's a good place to start.
I think it's less uppity than Duke and less state-school than NC State. Maybe work from the colleges out? There are lot of weird restaurants and clubs, events, hippyish kind of activities they like to do.
Active Outside. I'm not much of an outdoors person. Even with kids, there honestly wasn't that much to do. There are some good state parks to explore if you've got the time on the weekend, but that assumes the humidity isn't crushing and you're okay stopping to check for ticks every hour.
I never thought it was that great of an outdoor area, just because the entire state seems so infested with ticks that camping and hiking just weren't much fun for me. Swimming in the lakes was always a good time, though, so I'd definitely recommend taking some time and renting a boat on the water or something.
You can't really go wrong there, even though the water isn't exactly clear-looking. There are good trails and greenways for biking and strolling -- or if you like horses, for riding -- but I never found the views all that interesting, so I almost preferred biking in neighborhoods.
The nice thing about downtown Raleigh is that there are a good number of festivals that go on throughout the year.
