You can switch freely between the two classes, but you can only use primary abilities from your primary class, along with secondary abilities from your secondary class. Want a warrior that casts a little healing who can transform into a priest that can take a beating?

You can do that. Want a mage who can backstab and stealth when the mood strikes him? No problem. The Update Schedule: The Runes of Magic team want this game to buck standard RPG conventions by offerring not only free updates every few months, but free updates that include big changes. New classes and new races, generally relegated to retail expansions for the big-name MMO games, free additions such as these should be plentiful on Runes of Magic.

The Rune System: Now this bit is very, very nifty. Say you've finally found the perfect matching set of armor, but then come across a more powerful piece of equipment that looks plain ugly. Instead of ruining your outfit, strip the powers from the new object into a rune and then attach it to your old hat. You can even combine two runes together to form a more powerful one, though the higher the powers the more chance you have to fail.

Think of it as equipment gambling - do you destroy this high level piece when you could possibly fail, losing it all in the process? Player Housing: Player housing as been done before, but the Runes of Magic team is doing some interesting things with the player-made space.

Your character's gender is a purely cosmetic choice and does not affect your character's abilities in-game in any way. Please note that Dwarves can only be male at this time.

Choosing your character's race and class is the most important part of the character creation process. These will define your character's combat ability and appearance. Note: The human starting zone is connected to the rest of the world, but the others are not. Only elves can go to Elven Island, and only dwarves can go to Yrvandis Hollows.

All starting zones lead to Varanas City, so you won't be isolated forever. However, it's something to keep in mind if a friend is planning to help you get through the starting area. Each class is suitable for specific roles in combat. Here's a quick breakdown of combat roles and the classes capable of performing each role. Note: For players unfamiliar with the terms shown above, head over to the Glossary page to learn about some of the terminology used in Runes of Magic.

You will have the opportunity to customize your character's appearance to your liking. These settings can be changed later, but only by paying Diamonds, so think carefully about how you want your character to look. Be sure not to overlook any of the options, including skin color and hair color.

Note: Clicking and dragging on your character at this screen will rotate the view. Your character's name is an important identifier and you should not take the decision lightly. Your name cannot be changed later, so keep that in mind as you think about how people will view your character down the road. Also, you should try to think of a name that other players will be able to pronounce, since voice chat is fairly popular for high level players.
